Scotland has 17 prisons altogether, and they are spread out across the country, from big city establishments like HMP Barlinnie and HMP Edinburgh to smaller centres like Bella and Lilias and HMP Castle Huntly which is an open estate.

The Scottish Prison Service runs 16 of them, with HMP Addiewell being the one privately operated site.
